Synopsis

When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder. Much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with odd markings. This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons–and keeping the odd werewolves and vampires in line. It’s also her first meeting with gorgeous, golden-haired Jace. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in an ordinary mundane like Clary? And how did she suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know.

For poor Clary this book is one surprise/shock after another. First she witnesses a murder where the body disappears and no one else can see the ones doing the murdering. Then her mother mysteriously vanishes and Clary is attacked by a demon. She finds herself in this world she never even knew existed and she has to survive.

This was such a good book. I could not put it down. It is one of those books I should not have waited this long to read.

This book has so much to it. There are the demon hunters. There is kidnapping. This is a crazy paranormal party. There is the discovery of secrets you never wanted to know. And it all happens in about two weeks in New York City.

I think Clary takes everything that comes at her pretty well. I would have completely freaked out if even a quarter of what happens to Clary happened to me. She has to be so darn strong to put up with everything. Her whole world is turned upside down overnight and she manages to keep it together for the most part.

Simon is Clary’s best friend. They have known each other for basically forever. Simon is a mundane, he doesn’t see the shadow world of demons and paranormal. He is one who could have totally turned away from everything and gone back to his normal life. But he didn’t. He puts up with all the crazy stuff for Clary. That takes some guts.

Alec and Isabelle come off kind of… almost harsh. They both seem to like to know where everything fits in their lives and Clary doesn’t exactly fit. I think Isabelle is kind of awesome. Who wouldn’t want to be a super-awesome demon huntress?

Jace is kind of hard to read. He’s got some stuff in his past, like most of the others in this book. He seems to try to hide his emotions and everything else behind this persona he has created of the almost perfect Shadowhunter.

This story is fast-paced and moves right along. So much happens in not a lot of time. I was so engrossed in this book. And then the ending came along. I was totally not expecting some of it. Just… wow.

Thankfully my sister has agreed to let me borrow the next four books from her so I don’t have to wait for library holds.
