Synopsis

For too long, Violet and the people of the outer circles of the Lone City have lived in service to the royalty of the Jewel. But now the secret society known as the Black Key is preparing to seize power.
And while Violet knows she is at the center of this rebellion, she has a more personal stake in it—her sister, Hazel, has been taken by the Duchess of the Lake. Now, after fighting so hard to escape the Jewel, Violet must do everything in her power to return to save not only Hazel, but the future of the Lone City.

My Review

The Black Key is the third and final novel in The Lone City trilogy. Violet finds herself at the center of the revolution against the Royals. Her sister is a hostage of the Duchess of the Lake and Violet knows she has to save her sister from such a fate.

This novel follows the revolution as they face trials they never imagined. Violet needs to take responsibility for her role in the revolution and she has to do so quickly. Time is running out.

Ash has his own goals in this revolution that don’t always line up with those of the surrogates and even Violet herself. The question arises, Can they trust each other enough to work together to bring down the Royals of the Jewel?

The world-building was left slightly unresolved. There are still questions I have such as where the invaders came from and how they got there. We never really find out. I also wonder about the middle class who aren’t Royals but also, apparently, aren’t the Paladin. I’m not sure where they came from.

In all, this book does conclude the trilogy by tying up some loose ends, but I am still left with questions.
