My Review

I so enjoyed reentering Maria V Snyder’s Citia and Ixia. This is a rather great universe. I love the magic and the characters.

This story starts with Yelena hoping to finally begin her studies into what her abilities actually are. Things don’t stay on track very long before the Sandseed Vermin and Kahil start muddling things up.

Yelena ends up traveling Citia and even into Ixia searching for answers. What is really going on in Citia? What is the real goal of the Vermin? None of the answers is really what Yelena expected.

This book sees Yelena growing in her knowledge of her abilities. She is learning what it really means to be a soulfinder. She is also growing as a person. She has to face the question of whether magic always corrupts and whether she is willing to risk everyone she loves. She makes difficult decisions and she grows.

Valek is back in this one. His relationship with Yelena is an interesting one. They each try to protect the other when it is painfully obvious that it has never worked that way before. They are both so invested in what is happening.

The way this book ends leaves some questions open. I may have to see how soon I can lay my hands on Shadow Study to find out what happens next.
