{TTT} Bookish Issues That Have To Go!

Posted October 6, 2015 in Reading / 20 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week’s list is the Top Ten Bookish Things I Want to Quit Or Have Quit. Therefore, I give you my Top Ten Bookish Issues That Have To Go!

1. The Never-Ending Bought Books TBR

I seriously have some books at my house that I doubt I will ever read. I purchased them on a whim and I have to stop doing that. Seriously though, I –at times– buy too many books at once. This simply won’t do as it makes the TBR way too long.

2. The Strange Case of the Library Hold List

Have you ever just checked exactly how many books are on your library hold list and been totally amazed? This happened more to me when I lived in Wisconsin but it still, occasionally, happens here in Montana as well. Suddenly I will have like fifty million holds and they will all come in at once!

3. The Sad State of the Borrowed Book

When you lend a book and it comes back wrinkled, that is one of the worst things ever! I should just stop lending books. My books are my precious books. I love them and everyone else should keep their fingers to their own books (unless you’re my sister and then I might let you borrow if you beg nicely).

4. The Overflowing Bookshelf

There is never enough room on my bookshelves. I simply need more bookshelves. Someone should totally get on that. A girl can never ever have too many bookshelves. Such a thing is an impossibility!

5. The Hiding Spot of the Misplaced Book

There are times, admittedly rare, when I quite simply cannot find the specific book that I want. At such times as these, my poor missing friends should just show up in a hiding spot that I can find. A great place would be the bedside table or the top desk drawer. I’m not entirely sure how to stop this terrible occurrence unless I invest in GPS stickers so some such for each and every book (are such things even available??).

6. Choosing the Next-to-Read Book

This is such a hard thing to do. When I have so many great choices to choose from, how do I pick just one book? Sure, there are TBR jars but sometimes I don’t want to read whatever it is that I pick. Sometimes I don’t want to read whatever I have next on my list. Sometimes it is just too hard to pick the next book to read!

7. Picking the Perfect Snack

It is so hard to pick the perfect snack for each and every book I read (and snacking while reading is a must when dinners get skipped due to plot twists). Every book should come with a list of acceptable snack pairings to make the snack decision so much easier. For example, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe could totally recommend Turkish delight. Yes, this needs to happen.

8. The Sadly Lacking Similar Reads

Every book should end with similar recommended reads for those of us who adored the book. It would be so darn convenient if each book would just incorporate this small section. I would totally approve of this.

9. The Wonderful Liquid-Resistant Page

You know that terrible thing that happens who you have just taken a great big glup of delicious black tea before the character does something totally unexpected and the resultant explosion of tea from your mouth? Yes, this does happen at sometimes. There are times where you are so shocked that your mouth falls open. It is sometimes difficult to remember to swallow before the involuntary exclamation leaves your mouth. Therefore, pages could suffer damage and that could easily be avoided if liquid-resistant pages were a thing in books (or just certain sections of certain books) where this could become an issue. Help us protect our precious books!

10. The Terrible Cliff-Hanger Endings

Books that have these type of endings should come with a warning before beginning the book. I hate to come upon a cliff-hanger of an ending only to discover that I have three or four years to wait for the next release (looking at you, Green Rider, series)! Cliff-hangers need to be disclosed prior to reading a book so that we can determine if we should wait until the next book in the series is released. This could have some serious book-throwing that is harmful to both the book (physically) and the bookworm (emotionally).

These are the Top Ten Bookish Issues That Have To Go. Feel free to share yours as well and check out the rest of them at The Broke and the Bookish.

  1. You know I had like 8-10 books on hold for myself at the library all of which had been added at different times. Pretty much all of them came in on the same day, and the rest came in a couple days later. Figures…

  2. I discovered not too long ago that there’s a limit to how many holds you can have. It was something like 15 books. I try not to put in so many now because I start neglecting books I own and sometimes they can all come in at once, which can feel terribly overwhelming. Nice list!

  3. I always have several books on reserve at the library. And since I can impulsively add them via the on-line interface, my reserve list continues to grow. I feel like my library started the self-serve holds pick-up because the librarians were getting worn out walking back to get my reserves from behind the desk. 🙂

    • I can add them online as well which is not always a great thing.
My library doesn’t have self-serve pick-ups though that would be nice. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by. I hope your week is wonderful!

  4. This is a great list! Number 5 is the absolute worst for me! I had to catalog all of my books on my phone, so that I can stop buying duplicates of books I forget that I own. It has been really helpful for number 5, cause now I can check my catalog and make sure I am not just inventing a purchased book in my head :p But it doesn’t help me find the dang thing, and sometimes that can take over an hour!

    • I have the same thing. It is actually a Google Doc that I update on my computer but can view on my phone. I still wish it was so much easier to find the book.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you have a good week!

      • I wish that I had thought of doing something that could be viewed on my computer! Because sometimes I won’t have my phone with me, or I’d like to add a bunch of books to the wish list feature, and it takes so long to do it with the phone. But, I also like how the app lets you scan barcodes with your phone camera, because otherwise I would be too lazy to type up every book I own :p

Thanks, I hope you have a good week, too 🙂

        • It did take me quite a few days to actually get the whole thing typed up because I couldn’t bring myself to do it all at once. I did a few shelves at a time.

  5. Oooh, #3. I just can’t do it! Letting any my books out of my possession causes all sorts of panic, and it would drive me absolutely crazy if my books came back broken or stained. Shudders! And more bookshelves! Yes! You can never have too many bookshelves 😀 Awesome list, Amanda!

  6. Hahaha, I love your list! I don’t have a library hold list, but I do have a mountain of library fines from borrowing books, not reading them and then being late to return them! I’m pretty sure I keep everyone employed at my library with the amount of fines that I pay!
I would love more ‘Similar Reads’, I am always struggle to find books like the one I just read. Also, I never thought about snack pairings, but that would be cool! I’m really into baking, so would love something that I can bake and then nibble on whilst reading the book! Great list, it made me chuckle reading it.

    • Thanks. I had a lot of fun writing this list.
Ooohhh… real recipes inspired by the book would be awesome!
Thanks for visiting. I hope the rest of your week is amazing!

  7. Thanks for stopping by my TTT earlier. I have an understanding with anyone that borrows my books. That is that I expect them back in the exact same condition that I loaned them. Wrinkled. Bent pages. Bent cover. Damaged in any kind of way means that person owes me a new book. And hey I’ve actually had 2 friends voluntarily replace books for me that they damaged. They just need to know up front that’s the case.

    • That is a great system to have in place where the know to take care of your books. I only have a few people I would ever trust to follow that though.
Thanks for visiting. I hope the rest of your week is great and that you have a lovely weekend.

  8. AHHH I TOTALLY LOVED THIS!! And spot on, omg, all of them, particularly the library reserves though. Whyyyy do they all come in at one?!? I’m either waiting 76 million days for a book or — BOOM — it comes two days after a reserve and then I suddenly have too much to read and not enough time wails Also similar reads would be fabulous! 😀 I mean, Goodreads “supposedly” has that option, but I find their recommendations are rarely even LIKE the book. Very frustrating. -_-
