Synopsis
When kingdom come, there will be one.
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.
The last queen standing gets the crown.

My Review
This is the story of the Queens of Fennbirn. The country is an island surrounded by mist with little contact with the mainland. The triplet Queens were separated when they were four years old and have been raised to be enemies.
Katharine is a poisoner. He gift, her magic, is to be able to consume any poison without any ill effects. The problem is that her gift has not developed yet. She has spent twelve years being poisoned in hopes that she will develop an immunity to something when Ascension Year begins.
Arsinoe is a naturalist. Her gift allows her to make plants grow and control animals… or it should. Her gift has not yet developed either. She has spent the past twelve years trying to make flowers bloom and waiting for her familiar to come. She can’t and it hasn’t. She only has a slight hope of surviving the year.
Mirabella is an elemental. She can control all of the elements: air, earth, fire, water. In contrast to her sisters, she is strong and powerful. Her gifts have brought the Temple’s support for her reign and she is favored to be the last Queen standing at the end of Ascension Year.
The triplet Queens have three months before they official meet again at Beltane, the beginning of Ascension Year. The question remains: Who will be dead and who will be Queen?
I loved Three Dark Crowns. It was unique and it drew me in. I cannot wait to read the sequel and learn more about Fennbirn and the Queens. This novel has so many twists that set up the next one to be epically dark.
