{F56} Divine Mercy in My Soul

Divine Mercy in My Soul

I am currently reading Divine Mercy in My Soul, more commonly called The Diary, as part of my Lenten practices. I have read excerpts of The Diary before but this time, I intend to read the whole book. It is a rather large book with over 700 pages! This is primarily a book for spiritual reading and so I suspect that this book will take me quite some time to finish. Hopefully, by Easter (or at least Divine Mercy Sunday), I will be finished with my first reading of The Diary.

From Divine Mercy in My Soul: Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska by Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska (paragraph 56):

From the beginning I have been aware of my weakness. I know very well what I am of myself, because for this purpose Jesus has opened the eyes of my soul;
I am an abyss of misery, and hence I understand that whatever good
there is in my soul consists solely of His holy grace.

Lent is Almost Here! – My 2016 Lenten Sacrifices

Posted February 9, 2016 in Faith, Life / 0 Comments

Lent 2016

It is crazy to think that it is almost time for Lent to start. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday already! What has happened to this year! Anyway, I want to share my Lenten Sacrifices, the things I am going to give up during Lent to grow closer to Christ. Some people may be going, “Why give anything up? That sounds ridiculous.” Well, I give up something so that I can deny myself and grow deeper in my love for Christ. Here is what EWTN says on the topic:

By denying ourselves something we enjoy, we discipline our wills so that we are not slaves to our pleasures. … By disciplining the will to refuse pleasures when they are not sinful, a habit is developed which allows the will to refuse pleasures when they are sinful. There are few better ways to keep one’s priorities straight than by periodically denying ourselves things of lesser priority to show us that they are not necessary and focus our attention on what is necessary.

{TTT} Things I Do Besides Read

Posted January 26, 2016 in Faith, Life / 6 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week’s list is a freebie so I have decided to share with you the Top Ten Things I Do Besides Read. I hope that I can get to ten or else my life isn’t all that exciting.

1. Blog

I obviously blog or you wouldn’t be reading this right now. I would say that this takes up a fair share of my time.

2. Work

As I have mentioned before, I am a teacher. I teach in my school’s fifth and sixth grade special education and resource room. I love what I do but it is a lot of work. Some days are better than others and no day is ever like the day before. Everyday is definitely a new surprise… and sometimes I would rather the “surprise” went away.

3. Prayer

The first thing I do in the morning is pray Morning Prayer and prayer is one of the last things I do before bed at night. Prayer is a rather important part of my daily life. I think you could probably, maybe tell this from looking at my blog. The url is CATHOLICamanda. The title (Orandi et Legendi) is Latin. The tagline is “just a girl praying and reading.” Yep, prayer is pretty important to me.

{TTT} 2016 Resolutions

Posted January 5, 2016 in Faith, Life, Reading / 10 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week’s list is the Top Ten 2016 Resolutions. About half of these are bookish/bloggy, I’ll list them first. The rest are more personal.

1. Write More Discussion Posts

I seriously want to work on posting more than just reviews and memes. If you take a look at my archives, that is basically all that I post. I want to change that in 2016.

2. Read More Classics

I have a multitude of classics sitting on bookshelf. Seriously, they take up over a whole shelf. I really need to get to them. Quite a few will be rereads but I don’t care. It have been so long since I read the classics.

3. Read Books I Have Purchased

With the Christmas money from my grandmother, I purchased a four month gift subscription to Uppercase Box. Other than those books, I won’t be buying any more books until after my birthday in April. I really need to read the books that are on my shelf and have been sitting there for some time. Putting myself under a book buying ban may not sound like the nicest way to start the new year, but it is happening.

Happy Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God! & {F56}

Happy Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God!

Hail, Holy Queen

So I’m going to break all of the rules again, just like last week. If you aren’t Catholic, then you probably don’t realize that one week after Christmas (today) is another really important day. Today is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. In the Catholic Church, today is a Holy Day of Obligation (like Christmas) where Catholics are obliged to go to Mass. I love this feast day so much and I wanted to share it with all of you. Last year, I wrote a little post about the Hail Mary, this year I want to share some quotes from one of my favorite books.

From Hail, Holy Queen by Scott Hahn:

I sat on the bed, then dropped to my knees and prayed an apology to Jesus.
I felt I’d let Him down by letting His mother down. I felt as if I’d run
with the ball to the one-yard line, only to fumble short of the goal.
I said, “I’m sorry, Lord, for my weakness and failure.” I prayed a Hail Mary.
